HANDMADE SOAP...
A GREAT HOBBY
A PROFITABLE HOME BUSINESS

Soap making is positively the cleanest hobby! (yes, I just had to say it)

Do you like creating something?
Do you like baking?
Then you will enjoy making soap at home. Because making handmade
soap is very rewarding as a hobby or you can develop it into a lucrative home based business. Many people started making soap as a hobby for their own use and watched it develop into a full time job.

This great hobby will provide a source of gifts for you to give
to family and friends, I guarantee you will be amazed at the comments
you will get from them when they try your handmade soap for the first time.

If your primary goal is to make a soap that pampers your skin, then
you will need to use only food grade vegetable oils, natural oxides,
micas and clays for colorings and natural plant essential oils along
with cosmetic grade fragrances. If you have a desire to make
the best handmade soap, always use the best ingredients.

Handmade soap has cleaning  properties that will surprise you, heck, it will amaze you and anyone else who uses it for the first time.
Probably the best part is, it will become a very lucrative home based
business if you decide to sell it.

Commercially made soaps are mainly detergents. You probably
use similar stuff to wash your clothes. Sodium Laurel Sulfate,
Amonium laurel sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate. Industries with
large equipment use it as an engine degreaser.

    Handmade soap is "Glycerin Soap."
Glycerin, which is formed naturally by the cold process soap making method, containing many beneficial properties for your skin.
In many commercial soaps, all this beneficial glycerin, is harvested out.
Since handmade soap makers don’t harvest out the glycerin
from their soap, all homemade soap is glycerin rich.
You will hear ladies say; "I never use soap on my face but when
I tried your handmade soap I found a difference in a few days
"

"Cold Process soap"
This is the type of soap that most people refer
to when they talk about making soap at home. Cold process soap
is made by combining fatty acids and sodium hydroxide (lye) and
a liquid together. The "Fatty acids" part can be almost any oil.
Anything from beef tallow to olive oil to hemp oil. The combinations
for making your own personal recipes are endless and form the
basis for creating a lucrative home based business.
You will be in the position to sell your own distinct, unique product.

Cold process soapmaking is considered an art.
Well maybe it's a science.
Most likely a combination of both.
The thumbnail version of this type of soapmaking .... a specific
proportion of lye (sodium hydroxide) and water, added to oil,
creating a chemical reaction called “saponifaction.” During
saponification, the oils and the lye react to become soap.
After this, the curing process takes
approximately six weeks to fully complete.

Because cold process soapmaking requires the use of  lye
(lye is very caustic) caution is required. Proper mixing with
attention to the order of adding lye to water and the temperature
of the ingredients before combining etc. With the use of safety
equipment, such as goggles and gloves, you will be safe.

Please: Do not attempt to make cold process soap
without researching the method thoroughly.and
having a specific recipe to follow.

For example you will have to follow an exact recipe. Things like:
"When you are ready to mix the components you must
remember to always pour the lye from the container
into the water, never the water into the container of lye.
The last thing you want to do is cause an explosion!
Be sure to mix the lye and water combination continuously
until all the lye is dissolved. keep mixing because the reaction
alone will cause the solution to heat to more then 200 degrees
Fahrenheit; use a container that can easily withstand that type
of heat! The measuring of all ingredients should always be
done by weight. Some soap makers purposely add extra fats
and oils (beneficial) to their recipe so that consumers
can experience added skin care effects that these
oils can impart in a non soap form.
This is called super fatting. Super fatting is a more advanced
technique, just remember to follow the recipe carefully when first
starting out. Most recipes are already super-fatted for you so
you don't have to worry about extra lye in your soap. The intent
of this web page is to introduce you to soap making using the
cold process of making soap, there are many sources of
information on the internet.

Cold process soap is known for its hard, long lasting quality.
Depending on the oils used, the bar can have great lather
(use coconut oil for it's excellent lathering properties),
be mild (olive oil is renowned for being gentle) or moisturizing
(with the addition of oils like shea and cocoa butter or hemp oil).
You can add dyes colorings, fragrances and finely chopped
organics such as oatmeal. The skys the limit.
Be sure to double check your recipe with a lye calculator before
you proceed to make your soap. Even recipies you find in books.
If you are looking for a free lye calculator for that recipe you're
developing you could check one out here. You can
develop your recipe either using percentage or weight.

Melt and Pour clear soap:
A clear soap base can be purchased in large blocks to be melted down,
for you to add color and fragrances, ready for you to place into molds.
The artistry of melt and pour soap is called
"Soap Casting."

Note: If you plan to make clear glycerin soap for sale, you
should check the F.D.A. and check the rules about the use of
rubbing alcohol in soap. This is particularly important in Canada
where soap is handled more like a cosmetic

Melt and Pour is gaining in popularity because it is easy to making. There are no significant safety measures except a little common sense (the soap is hot and you will use sharp knives). This is a very special process because children can do it. This is a terrific hobby for creative people because the imagination is the only thing which can limit what you will do.

Hot process soap:
There are variations on the cold process method. The simple
explanation, add all your ingredients to a pot (that is then placed
over a heat source, such as a stove) and with frequent stirring
the soap will go through its various stages. The excess water is
evaporated off and the soap is ready to use once cooled. For more
information on Hot Process soapmaking, you can find many
interesting and informative articles on the internet.
